Thaan Charcoal

Portland, Oregon

Thaan Charcoal (the name is pronounced “tahn” and rhymes with John; it means charcoal in Thai) was founded in 2014 to solve a problem; available lump charcoal was messy, sooty, and inefficient.  It was also dangerous, with frequent pops and sparks due to pockets of moisture within the charcoal.

Thaan’s 100% natural, premium binchotan-style ultra-compressed log charcoal is a long-burning and clean alternative to commercial charcoal briquettes. It is made sustainably from rambutan orchard trimmings, which impart a very mild flavor, allowing the food to speak for itself. It burns hotter and longer (3-5 hours), with little to no smoke and ash, and it is reusable.  The consistent, even heat is easy to cook with and is great for any style of solid fuel cooking: grilling, barbecue, indirect cooking, wood-fired ovens, and particularly good where binchotan charcoal is traditionally used. Prized by chefs around the world, binchotan charcoal is famous for its use in Japanese grilled dishes, and Thaan can take its place in any application.

Thaan Charcoal first developed their product at a James Beard Award-winning, Michelin-starred restaurant and is now the first US-based supplier of premium extruded charcoal.
